Clean Makeup: Start With These 3 Products

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when presented with the idea of changing your entire makeup routine to “clean”. The key is to start small. But sometimes, even that can be confusing. In this blog post, I will break down which three makeup products you should switch to clean first, and my top product recommendation for each (all cruelty free).

Which products should you start with? The ones will make the biggest difference for your health and well-being. Why even make the switch? Well… “In cosmetics alone, the EU has banned or restricted more than 1,300 chemicals while the US has outlawed or curbed just 11.” So, let’s dive in!

1. Mascara

Conventional mascaras always irritate my eyes and they’re hard to remove. They can contain coal tar dyes (containing carcinogenic heavy metals), fragrance (which can mean a million mystery ingredients), preservatives (containing formaldehyde, petroleum and more), retinyl acetate (carcinogen) and so on. I hope this is convincing enough for you to switch to a mascara without these ingredients. Clean mascara that matches the performance of conventional ones can be tough to find. I’ve tried plenty of them, and none match the awesomeness of the Honest Beauty Mascara. This is a two-in-one, lash primer and mascara, that will lift and volumize those lashes like no other! It’s non-irritating, doesn’t smudge and lasts all day. Snag it here!

2. Lipstick

We literally eat our lipstick away. Conventional lipsticks often contain lead, parabens artificial colors and flavors, and the list goes on. Our lips are made of thinner tissue than skin, so some of those toxins get absorbed right away. If you ask me, I’m not into eating lead. The great news is, that there’s an amazing variety of non-toxic lipsticks, that work. To start you off, I recommend the RMS Beauty Wild with Desire Mini Lipstick Set; you get 5 minis of their bestselling organic lipsticks for $35, so you’ll have a variety to play with right off the bat, without committing to a full-size lipstick. The colors are super pigmented, and they have a hydrating, creamy and long lasting formula. My favorite shades from the set are Jezebel (blackberry red) and Nightfall (intense tawny cranberry). Get the set here! And if you want to get a full size, my favorite shade is “Flight of Fancy” – get it here!

3. Foundation

Whatever you slather on a larger surface of your body, you should go clean with. That’s why I suggest switching to a clean foundation ASAP. Sketchy ingredients lurking in conventional foundations are fragrance, parabens, and silicones, none of which are cute. My favorite non-toxic foundation is the Juice Beauty Phyto-pigments Flawless Serum Foundation. It goes on so beautifully, offers buildable, medium to full coverage, and it makes you glow. Plus, the majority of the ingredients are certified organic (a rarity!). It’s my ride or die. Buy it here!

That’s it! Keeping it to the basics here. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!
